ACQUISITION

Threads v. Twitter

You’ve probably heard about a little new social media app called Threads.

Meta basically copy-pasted Twitter and Musk is furious.

In case you haven’t jumped on the Threads bandwagon yet, you should know that the app reached 100 Million users in just five days. A milestone never before achieved. (Yeah it’s kinda cheating when you have over 2 billion users on your other app… but still impressive.)

Search Engine Land whipped up a solid Threads FAQ if you need to get up to speed.

Should take your business to Threads? There’s certainly an opportunity as an early adopter to make some noise in a space that is kinda fresh, free, new, and exciting.

Marketers are describing it as 'ā€œunhingedā€ and that’s a fun place to experiment.

So far, big brands like Nike, Calvin Klein, Shein, Walmart and celebrities like Oprah and Kim K have jumped on board, which is a promising start.

You can’t run ads on Threads yet, but it’s an almost certainty that this will roll out at some point. In the past with new social platforms there has been a real gold rush period of opportunity with relatively cheap ads and low hanging fruit as platforms essentially buy advertisers spend… fingers crossed.

Time will tell if it gets real traction and earns lasting screen time from users, but if you are gonna bet on anyone in this space it’s gotta be Zuck.

While we’re on the subject: Twitter threatens to sue Meta over Threads

Elon Musk's attorney is going after meta, alleging that the company hired some of those laid-off employees to make a rival social media app.

Remember, about 8 months ago, when Musk acquired Twitter and laid off nearly half it’s work force? Musk appeared to show little remorse in one tweet writing that he would like to "apologize for firing these geniuses."

"their immense talent will no doubt be of great use elsewhere, " he continued.

Is this coming back to bite him? Or will he get the last laugh? Stay tuned.

YouTube search: Hyperlinking keywords In comments

The gist: Certain keywords in YouTube comments will be hyperlinked. If users click one of them, it will start a new YouTube search with that term.

Why is YouTube testing this? To make search easier for users. Clicking a linked keyword means you no longer have to go back to the YouTube search page—and your video keeps playing in the miniplayer.

Who decides what gets linked? YouTube. Not creators, not commenters.

Ecommerce PPC: 4 optimizations to do before the holiday season

As we move closer and closer to the promised land of a fully automated AI-driven ads landscape, the question becomes what is your competitive advantage when everyone is using the same technology?

The answer lies in everything you do outside of your ads account.

Search Engine Land has a nice article covering 4 outside-of-Google optimisations you can make to get an advantage this holiday season, including:

  • Campaign structure - fewer campaigns for more traffic and better efficiency.

  • Offer positioning - presentation of your offer, how much it costs, what it includes, keeping in mind many purchases will be gifts.

  • Data feed - optimise titles, identifiers, price, and category.

  • Post-click experience - focus on website speed, landing or product page, and cart behaviour.

Meta’s guide to peak season planning

Meta have released regional guides to Peak Shopping Planning.

Key Note: More consumers are beginning their Christmas shopping as early as October, in order to capitalise on sales opportunities, and make smarter buying decisions. See above.

Connecting with shoppers ahead of time is crucial. This could be as simple as planting early seeds, offering interest-free repayments, or even early sales to maximise response.

Meta advises that brands should be considering a three month runway into Christmas.

ā€œInstead of just selling, lets actively reach out to customers and invite them into the christmas spirit early. Create an always-on connection to delight customers with unexpected discoveries and alleviate their frugal concerns.ā€

Time to start planning.

Emoji conversion booster

Did you know emojis work in Shopify product, pages, and post titles? And they show up most of the time in Google search results, leading to more eyeballs and more clicks on your hard-earned listings.

If you want the emojis to show up in your store as well as on Google, you can add them directly to the product/page/post title. (Head over to Emojipedia and simply copy-paste.) If you just want them on Google then add them to your SEO page titles only.

If you ever struggle coming up with unique angles for your ads then the titles alone should get your grey matter going:

  2. Podcast feature

  3. Research backed creative

  4. Product feature

  5. PR screenshots

  6. Reasons why I hate…

  7. Customer testimonials
