The biggest news of the week is Google’s new AI-powered search features, which they’re calling “Search Generative Experience”. This is probably the biggest change in how Google works since they launched. It’s BIG.
What is it? Generative AI technology in Search aims to enhance the shopping experience by providing a comprehensive understanding of products, thereby simplifying complex purchase decisions.
How does it work? When searching for a product, it offers an overview of important aspects to consider, and suggests suitable products. The system also delivers product descriptions, complete with up-to-date reviews, ratings, prices, and images.
Where does the data come from? This advanced shopping experience leverages Google's Shopping Graph, a dataset containing over 35 billion product listings, making it the most extensive source of continually updated information on products, sellers, brands, reviews, and inventory globally.
How will this play out for Shopify merchants? Only time will tell. But there’s no doubt AI is here to stay. Store owners who learn how to maximise their visibility in whatever technology Google rolls out are likely to do well.
